North American Vexillological Association in World Flags Manufacturers Directory

Nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of vexillology, the scientific and scholarly study of flag history and symbolism. In the Winter 196667 issue of The Flag Bulletin, a call went out to the vexillologists of the United States and Canada, inviting them to a conference in June, 1967 in Boston, Massachusetts. The initiative was taken by Whitney Smith, Director of the Flag Research Center of Winchester, Massachusetts. Some twenty leaders in all fields of vexillology voted to establish the North American Vexillological Association at this meeting. They invited all interested persons in the United States and Canada to join NAVA and pursue work in all aspects of vexillology. Professor Pierre LuxWurm was elected the Acting President of NAVA. Whitney Smith was elected Acting Secretary, and represent NAVA at the Second International Congress of Vexillology held in Zurich, Switzerland, when it became the first member applicant in the International Federation of Vexillological Associations FIAV.
